Happy 2016 everyone! Making resolutions is a time-honored tradition, and we at Keystone Health Partners wanted to share some ideas as we make our way through January. Since our main office is in Sarasota, we’ll take a Florida approach to our resolutions! First up: the Florida Department of Health...
- Get healthy. Take the Florida Department of Health Challenge: The State of Florida issued a challenge to its residents called “60 Days to Better Health.” They submitted six basic concepts for Florida residents to try for 60 days with the goal of improving basic health and vitality.
2) Control Your Portions - It’s like Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Moderation in all things, especially moderation.” Staying active will help you eat when you’re hungry, not when you’re bored.
3) Drink 8 Ounces of Water Eight Times Per Day - According to waterinfo.org the human brain and muscles are made up of 75% water. All of the blood running through our vital organs is 92% water. The stuff is important to a properly running body. Give yours what it needs.
4) Do 60+ Minutes of Physical Activity - Physical activity is a great way to relieve stress and keep your body firing on all cylinders. Fortunately we Floridians live in a wonderful state for getting outside. Go out and enjoy the sunshine...even in January!
5) Work on Quitting Tobacco - According to ash.org, Tobacco causes more than one out of every five deaths in the United States. It’s no wonder considering the tobacco smoke you’re consuming contains over 4,000 chemicals. Want to live a longer, healthier lifestyle? Make tobacco a thing of the past.
6) “De-stress” Your Lifestyle - We all get caught up in day-to-day stress. Life is busy. Take a minute to smell the roses. Dedicating 15 minutes a day to some peace and quiet will benefit your health and happiness.
- The Three D’s: Do, Delegate, Drop. This is a common phrase to help people prioritize the many tasks that creep up in day-to-day life. Here’s a quick breakout of the Ds:
- Do: Figure out what things you personally must accomplish, and list them so that you have some accountability for yourself. For instance, no one else can rest for you, relax for you, work out for you, read for you, etc.
- Delegate: Pass off the tasks that must be accomplished, but that are not specifically required to be completed by you. In the world of private practice, outsourcing medical billing is one such task...it has to be done, but someone else is better suited to do it quickly, accurately, and reliably.
- Drop: Those things that can’t be done or delegated should get dropped (or at least delayed...the fourth D?!?). This will ensure that you’re not overwhelmed by tasks that aren’t important.
- Make your world a better place. There are many different ways to influence your own sphere positively. For instance, resolve to do one act of kindness for someone every week. Spearhead a litter cleanup initiative in your neighborhood...just by setting an example. Start a small garden at home or near your workspace. There are as many ways to better the world as there are people - find what works for you, and DO it!
